UCH commissions seven projects

The Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire today commissioned seven projects at the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan, while presenting a letter renewing the appointment of the Chief Medical Director, Dr Abiodun Otegbayo in Ibadan.

The minister, who personally brought the letter re-appointing Otegbayo for another four years, decribed the projects as a commitment of the Federal Government to consolidate the infrastructure of the health sector at all levels

He said the projects will strengthen the hospital’s capacity in discharging its mandate to treat, train and conduct research.

Ehanire disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari approved one molecular laboratory, an oxygen plant, an ICU and an Isolation Center for all the 36 states after the COVID-19 pandemic to demonstrate his commitment in preparing the country for future challenges.

He said that the establishment of those purpose-built facilities will improve the capacity to cope with the needs of rising patient population in all public health emergency as well as in routine service delivery.

The Minister stated that there’s an ongoing program which will add to the national cancer treatment inventory to improve access to treatment, learning and research.

“I am sure UCH, sooner than later will also benefit from such initiative since the goal is continuous investment in our medical centers, to upgrade capacity and quality of care to globally competitive standards that match or surpass those of foreign countries which our citizens currently patronize”, he said.

He commended the Board and Management of UCH on the initiatives and the milestones they have been able to achieve.

Ehanire also charged the Board and Mnangement to recapture their past reputation, not just as the premier hospital in Nigeria, but as a leading destination for cutting-edge healthcare in Africa.

The commissioned projects includec a 64-Slice CT scanner which will enhance the hospital’s radio-diagnostic capabilities; the in-patient and out-patient Digital Mamography machines which comes with the latest 2D and 3D technology to detect breast cancer in their early stages in women thus improving their survival chances.

Others are the ultra-modern molecular laboratory, Pressure Swing Absorption Oxygen Plant and the state-of-the-art Demonstration Room in the Nurse/Midwife/Public Health Nurse Tutors’ School.
