The Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo in his wisdom and love for the University College Hospital, Ibadan aspires to elevate the University College Hospital, Ibadan from a tertiary Hospital to a quaternary Hospital to advance the level of medicine which are highly specialized, thereby making it the first in Africa. His desire to take UCH back to its former glory of the 1970s/1980s and even better through the improvement of our service delivery to our esteemed clients was instrumental to the creation of the Special Duties Unit in May 2019.


Collective responsibility (Together Everyone Achieves More – TEAM) is expected of everyone to bring UCH to its place of glory in the medical world and society at large. Therefore, the reason for birthing the Special Duties Unit where there will be coordination of the joint efforts to cover the following scope of activities –

  • Security
  • Environmental Sanitation and Aesthetics
  • Customer Care/Patient Liaison
  • Staff welfare and Safety
  • Innovations
  • Fund Raising
  • Vehicle Parking Space
  • Inter-Professional Co-operation
  • International Relations/Strategic Plan

The official inauguration of the Unit and its sub-committees was held on Wednesday, 19th June, 2019 by the 8th Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo. 

Prof. Omolola Mojisola. Atalabi a seasoned Radiologist of international repute and experienced in administrative issues was appointed as the founder Head of this Unit and Dr.Taiwo Omolola Soyinka, a Consultant Family Physician, as the Deputy Head of Unit, who then became the Acting  Head of the Unit from 1st September 2019 to October 2021. Dr. Tawakalit Olubukola Salam, a Consultant Family Physician became the Deputy Head of the Unit in October 2021 and presently Heads the Unit.

For effectiveness, involvement and contribution from all cadres of staff in line with the vision of the 8th Chief Medical Director of “Shared Vision for Excellence”, the scope of the Unit was therefore merged into four (4) sub-committees presided over by a Chairman and other members drawn from different cadres and professions in the Hospital namely:-

  1. Customer care/Patient Liaison
  2. Security, Staff safety and Vehicle Parking space
  3. Environmental Sanitation and Environmental Aesthetics
  4. Staff Welfare/Employee Assisted program

Other matters overseen by the Unit are Metering and Energy consumption of the Hospital, Illumination of the premises and Diesel management.

Through the relentless effort of the staff of the Special Duties Unit, the Chairmen and members of the sub-committees, the following are some of the activities of the unit:

  1. The launching of the Patient’s Helper Initiative to reduce the burden of care as related to the social, economic, physical and psychological stress of caring for patients.
  2. Creation of a wheelchair station at the drop-off zones for the out-patients, to improve the quality of health care delivery and reduce the caregivers’ burden. The wheelchair stations are situated at the Hospital’s main entrance opposite the Physiotherapy Department and the front of the Family Medicine Department.
  3. Erection and pasting of appropriate directional signages and warning notices within the premises as necessary.
  4. Monitoring and ensuring proper lighting of the Hospital environment.
  5. Overseeing vehicle parking spaces and sanctioning for indiscriminate parking.
  6. Identifying minor and major repairs in the Hospital and working out with the department/unit in which the work is to be carried out.
  7. Daily inspection and ensuring the environmental sanitation in the Hospital inclusive of the public restrooms and the clearance of waste in the Hospital including the residential areas.
  8. Ensuring the strict compliance of pasting posters on walls/doors only in designated areas to improve the aesthetics of the Hospital.
  9. Providing a baby-friendly enabling workplace environment, by establishing a UCH creche for staff who are nursing mothers for the care of their children while on duty.
