LAPAROSCOPY
Out-patient Laparoscopy is offered to gynaecological patients who present with benign conditions such as acute pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, infertility especially in the evaluation of tubal patency. Other indications include retrieval of missing IUCD, biopsies and cyst excision.
Minimal access procedures began at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, in September 1975 with the introduction of minilaparotomy for tubal sterilization. Minilaparotomy, a quick and safe out-patient procedure was conducted under local anaesthesia. Over the years, several facilities have been added to the practice including Diagnostic Out-patient Laparoscopy and Hysteroscopy.
Hysteroscopy on the other hand provides a panoramic view of the endometrial cavity and is deployed in the evaluation of the uterine cavity prior to In-Vitro-Fertilization. Other applications include excision of intra-uterine adhesions and polyps, endometrial biopsy and endometrial scratching prior to In-Vitro-Fertilization.
Laparoscopic and hysteroscopic services are provided daily except for Wednesdays, between the hours of 9am- 4pm with an average of 5 procedures performed per day. Fees are very subsidized and can be paid out of pocket or via health insurance. Registration and booking for the procedures can be done through the gynaecological clinic or on-site at the endoscopy unit.
There are on-going plans to expand the laparoscopic and hysteroscopic services provided by the hospital via the incorporation of operative procedures such that minimal access surgeries can be offered at an affordable cost.
