Hospice and Palliative Care

SHORT DESCRIPTION OF DEPARTMENT

The Department of Hospice and Palliative Care offers a support system to help patients with life-limiting and incurable illnesses live as actively as possible in good quality of life until death. Such illnesses include: cancer and HIV/AIDS, chronic neurologic diseases such as strokes and dementia, chronic renal, cardiac and respiratory diseases and sickle cell anaemia. Using a team approach, palliative care addresses the needs of patients and their families as they develop, from the time of initial diagnosis through the stages of the illness until the end of life. Palliative care is offered in conjunction with curative treatments and is offered as outpatient inpatient and home-based basis.

BRIEF HISTORY OF DEPARTMENT.

Palliative care is a new addition to Nigeria health care system as development commenced in 1991. The University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan is a foremost tertiary Hospital in Nigeria. It is the first tertiary hospital to start structured Palliative Care Services. The services commenced in 2007 as a collaborative effort between the hospital and the Centre for Palliative Care Nigeria (CPCN) which is a non-profit organization. Patients are offered hospital-based palliative care as well as home based care for those who cannot come to the hospital for various reasons.

CORE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE DEPARTMENT

SERVICES

  • Provision of comprehensive palliative care services for patients living with life-limiting illnesses on admission in the hospital. This includes pain relief and control of other distressing symptoms
  • Provision of palliative and supportive care for patients on out-patient basis
  • Home-based Care Services
  • Adult Day Care Forum
  • Paediatric Day Care forum

TEACHING ACTIVITIES

  • Weekly Departmental Seminars
  • Teaching of medical and Dental students
  • Teaching of postgraduate students of the Department of Psychology, University of Ibadan, Ibadan
  • Teaching of international students on the fundamentals of Palliative Care

RESEARCH

  • Many studies are on-going in the Department. The Principal investigator is rotated among staff depending on the area of interest.
  • Published works are available on-line
  • Rotating students are also encouraged to conduct some research.
